CANON POINT: End of the DRESSROSA arc
BACKGROUND: Pretty big history.
PERSONALITY:
Have you ever met a person who claims that they’ll get sick if they take too much time thinking about something? Monkey D. Luffy is a man of extraordinarily low intelligence, being the type of person who finds extraordinary in the ordinary, and who is baffled by even the most simple of intellectual concepts. Overheated due to being sick or ill? Eat something cold. Someone doing something that’s making your life difficult? Punch them until they stop. So far as Luffy’s concerned, if something is worth going for, there’s no point in stopping yourself from moving forward just because there are obstacles in the way. This sort of simple-minded thinking can be both a curse and a merit for the pirate captain, in the way that it can cause those he interacts with to find him extremely irritating or simple… or it can cause people to realise that maybe some things are just better done without complicated thinking. The greatest of leaders don’t have to be the smartest in the world, they just have to be worth following.
This simple-minded existence also causes him to be extremely accepting of other people, no matter who they are or what walk of life they come from. Are you a monster? That’s fine. Were you born a tree-person, a fish-person, or perhaps you’re a man trapped in a treasure chest? It doesn’t really matter to Luffy, he won’t have a thing to say about it except maybe to ask if you poop like any other normal being does. Being judgemental of others gets in the way of more important things, after all, like experiencing new things, making new friends, or just plain finding adventure alongside those who may be judged harshly against, such as Fishmen are in Sabaody Archipelago. If he doesn’t understand something, he explains it away in extraordinarily simple means. Such as when agreeing to form a pirate’s alliance with Trafalgar Law--he has no idea what it actually means to make an ‘alliance’, so instead he decides that it simply means that Law wants to be friends. He also has absolutely no interest in anything that’s boring--or anything that takes away from the sense of adventure or discovery.
The closest thing to describe Luffy’s personality would be to liken him to that of a child. He goes into extremes, either one way or the other with his incessant appetite and greed for food and adventure, or the way that he can logic out that it’s okay to risk your life if it means that you’re doing it for someone who you deeply care about, or getting angry easily at things that he doesn’t agree with. He doesn’t have any time for anything that’s ‘boring’ or ‘pointless’, and even claims that he would quit being a pirate if at any point he decides that the adventure of finding One Piece becomes anything but a thrill he can enjoy alongside his crew. This childlike personality also comes out in how he views others, such as when he’s introducing his crew to his older brother ‘Ace’, stating how ‘cool and strong’ he is with pride and a starry expression. He also has a bad habit of complimenting villains when he thinks they look ‘really cool’, and he thinks that armour makes anyone look ‘awesome’--even himself. Another trait that comes hand-in-hand with this personality of a child is the fact that he’s completely incapable of lying. Saying anything that’s untrue is followed up with the world’s absolute worst pokerface, or even giggling when doing something he’s trying to keep a secret(like putting a booger in Zoro’s drink and then giggling about it).
Despite his almost pea-brained simplicity, Luffy has a number of traits to make up for the sheer lack of intelligence he shows in everyday situations--such including his undying and unshakable loyalty in those he cares about or even just those he finds worth in. Every single one of his ‘Nakama’ or Crewmates are worth fighting even to the death for, and he’s proven over and over in the series that he would go extraordinary lengths in order to protect them--such as when he takes on the Fishman pirates to save his Navigator, Nami, or when he faces the entirety of Enies Lobby in order to save the Nico Robin, the Historian who had pushed her way onto his ship without his initial permission in the first place. ‘Treasures’ are also something that he won’t allow to be touched by anyone seeking a higher prize--and these treasures don’t necessarily have to be money or sparkle like gold. Threatening what someone treasures, be them friend or acquaintance can often pull a very violent reaction out of Luffy, such as when Buggy the Clown damaged his prized hat, or when the Black Cat Pirates threatened to destroy Usopp’s treasure--Syrup Village. He will fight for his beliefs, and for the beliefs of others even if it means he might die while doing it.
Which brings up the trait of absolutely unshakable fearlessness the self-proclaimed ‘Future Pirate King’ possesses. His dream is one that’s repeated throughout the entire series, that he will ‘become the King of the Pirates’ by way of finding One Piece. That he will travel all the seas in the world and seize the entire sea, that he will explore all there is to explore and be the freest man on the Big Blue. However, he states quite a few times in the series that he ‘isn’t afraid to die’, even if it means that he’ll never reach his goal. Even during the battle in Loguetown that broke out between the Straw Hat Pirates, the Marines, and Buggy the Clown, Luffy was almost executed atop the very same gallows that Gold Roger--the first Pirate King--had been killed on many years ago. Just before Buggy’s sword sliced through his neck, Luffy smiled down upon his crewmates with a wide grin, merely stating that ‘Sorry guys, I died!’ without a single look of regret on his face. His unshakable optimism and complete fearlessness in the face of all dangers can and does combat absolutely any obstacle that stands before him--so much so that even dying won’t stop Luffy from doing what he believes in.
While his intelligence is, as stated and proved to be earlier, simple at best, when it comes to fighting and battle, there is no-one that can best the type of quick-thinking and survival tactics he can come up with while in a pinch. Often described to be ‘like an animal’ in the way he fights, relying on instinct and what he can see as opposed to actually using logic or intelligence to think things through, Luffy has been able to one-up nearly every single opponent he comes in contact with, such as using Arlong’s detached teeth as weapons; figuring out how to mimic complicated techniques like ‘Soru’ by developing ‘Gear Second’ instead, for example, or how he manages to best Enel’s Observation Haki by bouncing his strikes off of walls and obstacles to create more random strikes that couldn’t be predicted.
Because of his simple nature and the lack of inflection in his tone, the comments Luffy often makes during battle or other situations can carry varied weight to them depending on the situation. Often accused of ‘egging on’ or making fun of his opponents and throwing them into a rage with comments that are stated without any real weight behind them (Like calling Alvida ‘hag’, or disrespectfully calling Doflamingo ‘Mingo’). On the flipside, he also tends to accidentally impart powerful wisdom or resolve on others by just stating how he feels about something or how he perceives it as true, such as when he believed Coby could join the Marines, or how he gave Laboon a meaning to live and stop hurting himself.
The last trait worth mentioning about Luffy’s childlike and simple personality would be that of his absolute selflessness, and the way he treats people--even his enemies. There’s a great number of times in the series where his sense of need towards helping others has gotten him many allies towards a cause--such as during his fight in Marineford, where a great number of pirates sided with him as he attempts to save the life of his brother Ace, or in Impel Down when his desperation to have Ivankov save Bon Clay despite his own near-fatal injuries caused him to gain the aid of everyone in New Kama Land. Those he’s decided are friends are met with his desire to help them no matter what--and those who he fights against and even holds petty child-like grudges against, he won’t even kill, even if they themselves have murdered people in front of Luffy’s eyes.
In short, Luffy is a simple man with only big dreams, and he will do anything to achieve them--all while having fun with his friends and family along the way.
ABILITIES:
Devil Fruit: GOMU GOMU NO MI (The Gum Gum Fruit)
Devil Fruit are a kind of mysterious fruit in the One Piece world that grant unique, differing powers to those who consume them, but also afflict the user with a crippling weakness to seawater or seastone.
Luffy's Devil Fruit is a Paramecia type Devil Fruit that has made his entire body have the consistency and properties of rubber. Meaning his bones, organs, skin and muscle can all stretch without causing him any damage, and he is immune to electricity. He can also be punched, kicked, hit with large objects with little to no effect--Such as when Alvida tried to crush him with her Iron mace, and when Mountain Bandits tried to beat him up only to do 'little to no damage' to him. It also means that getting shot with bullets or even cannonballs won't end up killing him, but will merely bounce off.
Having eaten this fruit when he was a child, Luffy's had years of experience with having a body made of rubber, which means he's had years of practice in figuring out special techniques that go with it. His techniques all enable him to stretch out and twist parts of his body unnaturally in order to deliver momentum-built, high-speed, or often multiple strikes upon an opponent during battle--or allow him to do defensive things with his body parts such as make his body bigger, or entwining his fingers to make nets to catch people/things, or to deflect bullets or cannonballs. He can even make himself hover by twisting his legs around themselves multiple times, creating a sort of ‘propeller’ with his legs.
Within the powers of his Devil Fruit, he has the ability to strengthen himself using the specifics of the Gomu Gomu no Mi. These sub-forms are called ‘Gears’, and they come in three different categories:
Gear Second
By using his elastic constitution, Luffy is capable of speeding up the flow of blood in some or all of his body parts. By doing this, his entire body emits a sort of steam, and his skin turns pink from the exertion--but he can attain a speed that’s damn near superhuman, and it nearly doubles his strength and mobility while active. This is possible only because his organs and blood vessels are made of rubber, and doesn’t run the risk of tearing or damaging them from the exertion. However, using this form causes his metabolism to take a great toll, and in order to keep this technique up, he needs to eat a lot more beforehand or afterwards, else he runs the risk of hurting himself or even causing himself to be paralyzed from the aftereffects.
Gear Third
By biting a small hole in the crook of his thumb, Luffy is able to blow air into his body, and therefore cause his limbs to grow. Someone suggests that this is merely a cosmetic change, and that it’s the same effect as blowing up a balloon, but the air he pushes into his muscle and bones becomes compressed, and the affected body parts become harder and stronger. Sort of like taking a soft rubber ball and making it as hard as the rubber in a tire. A punch from one of his limbs in ‘gigantic’ form can cause more damage than a regular strike but its delivery is slower than a regular strike is. Thanks to Luffy’s immense strength, he’s capable of moving these super-sized limbs. He can also transfer the compressed air from one part of his body to the other, such as to make his arm giant to transfer it down his torso to one of his legs. The downside to this power is that once it’s deactivated, his body shrinks into childlike proportions and he’s forced to stay small and powerless for roughly the same amount of time that he had Gear Third activated.
Gear Fourth
Gear Forth is an odd mix of both Gears Second and Third, as well as using Haki to boost his powers. By using the same air compression within his body, Luffy expands his body to unusual proportions, hardening his entire body to a misshapen form that he claims to have developed in order to fight the monsters he trained against during his two-year hiatus from being a pirate. In this form, his entire body seems weightless, as his feet cannot touch the ground without causing his entire body to ‘bounce’. Likewise, being hit causes him to lose control of any proper footing, bouncing around like a rubber ball before he’s able to gain back his own sense of momentum. In this form, he can not only overpower almost any foe by way of sheer strength, but his body is specifically designed to repel just about any attack done to him. Codenamed ‘Bounce Man’, he becomes something nearly inhuman and difficult to combat against. He can change the direction of his attacks midair, zig-zagging attacks that can’t be predicted, and the force behind his punches are devastating. The downside to this form is that once it’s deactivated, Luffy is rendered incapable of moving, let alone fighting more--and can even pass out for days after.
HAKI:
In the One Piece World, other than Devil Fruit, there are other powers that exist and can be learnt by ABSOLUTELY ANYONE with enough practice, talent, or by accidentally awakening them. Haki is described being ‘as natural as one’s own five senses’, and if the talent for awakening them exists, anyone can learn. Monkey D. Luffy has a control over all three of the different types of Haki that exist, but mostly on instinct. However, he can purposefully implement them in battle, though he didn’t even know the power existed in him for a long time until being told what it was.
Kenbunshoku: The Observation Haki:
This Haki is used in order to sense the presence of others, but it can also be used in order to perceive and avoid things such as physical attacks, gunshots, or how someone is going to move. By ‘predicting’ how an opponent is going to move, or by sensing movement, the user of this haki can fight against a foe without taking a single hit from them simply by avoiding every attack using this Haki.
Some more non-conventional uses of this Haki is to sense the hidden emotions in others, as well as to overhear conversations that are far out of the normal ‘range’ for a human without the power of Observation to hear.
Busoshoku: The Armament Haki:
By using the force of one’s spiritual energy, this Haki can be used to ‘harden’ different parts of the user’s body or held objects in order to defend themselves from attacks, or even to deliver harder strikes during a fight. This Haki can also be used in order to hard-counter and actually strike any Devil Fruit user who has a ‘Logia’(elemental) type power without causing the attacker damage due to trying to hurt someone with a body without a solid constitution. It’s a sort of invisible armour, normally, however, those able to use this Haki in higher amounts, its invisibility is lost and it covers the user’s body parts or weapons in a sort of shiny black covering, and if two Armament Haki users clash with this power, sparks of black energy burst out from the areas that are struck. Armament Haki cannot be used to infinitum, and the user does eventually ‘run out’ of energy needed to use this Haki during battle.
Haoshoku: The Conqueror's Haki
The ‘rarest’ form of all Haki types, the Conqueror’s Haki is said to only exist in one person in every million. It is unattainable by way of training, and is only accessible by individuals who are born with the ability. It’s said all those who can use this haki type have the ‘quality of a ruler’. When used, it allows someone exert their willpower forcefully onto those around them, overpowering any with a will weaker than their own and forcing them to pass out if the released Haki is strong enough. The larger in the gap in power between the user and anyone in the area, the more drastic the effect will be, and anyone experiencing the Haki for themselves are said to feel chills and discomfort for a short while after it first being used on them. While using it in short bursts is the most commonly seen version of this Haki, it’s also possible for the user to release it continuously, creating constant pressure to put a strain on opponents they may be fighting or to weaken the will of any enemy faced. When two users of this rare Haki clash, the energy created when they exchange blows create shockwaves that is potentially damaging to those around them.
